The Home Stretch of a Pleasant Pregnancy

I have to say that this past week has been the most uncomfortable week of my pregnancy. It’s painful to turn around in bed and difficult to walk. So before these last few weeks make me forget how great my first nine months have been, I thought I’d share this now.

I’ve been very lucky to have had a good pregnant, and I’m going to miss it. Knowing that many friends of mine have had dreadful experiences, I do feel somewhat guilty for loving every moment of mine. The worst part of it was my own doing; I’m a natural worrier, so with all this new to me, I worried more than I should have but I’ve learned to relax.

My First Trimester – Weeks 1-13
I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks, two days before my 32nd birthday. My breasts started aching just days before that, which made me wonder. It wasn’t even the fact that my period was a week late. I wasn’t going to bother going by a schedule because I’d just stopped taking the pill the month before and I figured it would take awhile to get back to normal. For 2-3 weeks after that, my symptoms were achy breasts, slight nausea and general fatigue. Nothing showstopping. Just as long as I had something to eat first thing in the morning, my nausea went away. And the sore breasts and general fatigue were ironically comforting to me. It was a reminder that my little embryo was growing. By week 7 or 8, I was feeling back to my normal self. No symptoms. No discomfort. I was looking forward to my first ultrasound, which was at week 10. I saw the little peanut and it was perfect. I did also notice my skin improved during this time and has been the same since. I always struggled with breakouts every now and then, but my skin was so clear that I felt comfortable enough to leave the house without foundation. Not sure if it was due to hormones or the fact that I start using all natural products, but this was great news.

My Second Trimester – Weeks 14-26
I started my second trimester in Europe. Having no symptoms, I was able to enjoy the long walks and all the food in Italy. By the time I started to show around week 15, I started to enjoy the pregnancy talk with friends and coworkers. And the convos always went the same way — with me answering with ‘I’m feeling very good’. Other than the growing belly, I didn’t feel like I was pregnant. I was able to restart an exercise routine, which I think helped boost my energy even more. Also, during my this time, I had the IPS screening completed and the anatomy ultrasound, and everything was going as planned. I also felt those little movements for the first time.

My Third Trimester – Weeks 27-now (37.5)
Other than the occasional backache, my third trimester has been smooth. At the beginning of the third, I was just starting my bootcamp class. And I attended that every week up until this past weekend. During this time, I enjoyed watching my belly grow. I’m going to miss rubbing it and feeling the kicks and hiccups — and even watching the creepy-looking alien movements. I can’t even complain much about my lack of sleep, as I expected this and to me, it’s just mommy-training.

On a side note, I do have two lighthearted complaints about my pregnancy:

  • My breasts did not grow at all! I was looking forward to some increase in size, but with no luck, I’ve had my modest pair all along. Maybe breastfeeding will give me a little boost.
  • During the last trimester, I lost a few pairs of socks. I’d come home with holes in them because of my toenails :( It’s been a struggle to cut my nails so sometimes I’d forget or wouldn’t even bother. I’m looking forward to being able to do pedicures on my own without feeling like a contortionist.

And that’s it! That’s my nine months in a nutshell. I’m as ready as I can be for the next phase–labour!!
